“There needs to be a shift in thinking towards planning for people rather than simply reproducing old transport engineering solutions in response to the whims of out-of-touch politicians” says Dr Wilmore, Secretary of the Community Alliance SA.

Residents and community members came to hear answers to the BIG transport questions.

The event was facilitated by Ian Henschke.  Expert keynote speakers addressed a number of critical transport planning issues including the Government’s plans to develop South Road as a freeway, a proposed rail and/or road freight bypass around Adelaide and the proposed new tram network:

Followed by a Q & A session with politicians and other experts in addition to the keynote speakers:

  • Andy Milazzo – Deputy CEO Dept of Planning, Transport & Infrastructure
  • Daniel Bennett – City Design and Transport Manager, Adelaide City Council
  • Corey Wingard – Opposition Minister for Transport
  • Kevin O’Leary – Urban planner and commentator
  • Mark Borlace – RAA Spokesperson

The Q&A panel answered questions on a range of subjects from improving cycling facilities, overseas initiatives to remove freeways, travel behaviour and how to fit trams into crowded roads.  There was a lot of support from the panel and the audience for the government to look into building a freight bypass.  To contact the community groups advocating for this, please email [email protected]

At the end of the forum, the Community Alliance SA Secretary Dr Helen Wilmore gave the organisation’s position on the main issues discussed:

“There are clearly better alternatives to the Government’s current plans for the North South Corridor and it’s not too late for these to be considered.  The Community Alliance wants to see communities and experts given a genuine opportunity to review the pros and cons for alternative solutions and different options for dealing with traffic congestion.

We want the Government to carry out a thorough study into a rail and/or road freight bypass around Adelaide.

It is essential that future major transport projects are developed through thorough research and debate, including into alternative solutions, with input from experts and the community.”
